Former national radio DJ, Liz Kershaw, 64, recalled wild parties with former Countdown presenter Carol Vorderman, 62.

Speaking about the latter’s 2010 biography at the time, she shared how the maths whizz changed her life back in their early 20s.

Their friendship strengthened when Liz formed a Leeds-based pop band called, Dawn Chorus and the Blue Tits, with friend and then neighbour Carol in 1984.

Tracks including Teenage Kicks featuring Undertones’ O’Neill brothers and Peel Session saw moderate success and played on stations such as BBC Radio 1.

Writing previously for the Daily Mail, Liz shared: “Memories of those days aren’t so much about the successes of the band but the fun Carol and I shared as young women in Leeds.”

Whilst hosting one party, Liz claimed that the police were called by “our long-suffering middle-aged neighbours”.

“What they didn’t realise was that we loved the police pitching up – a party was deemed to be a flop if a member of the West Yorkshire Constabulary didn’t attend.

“The policeman was steered quickly into the kitchen, given a large Scotch and a snog.”

The start of their friendship can be traced to her brother and fellow broadcaster, Andy Kershaw, 63, whom she lived with after university.

Despite working hard, she recalled how the siblings were always skint because “we partied hard” and often had friends over.

This included singer Billy Bragg, 65, and how “bands from all over the world would crash on our floor”.

Through these gatherings, she first met Carol, who would later join the band.

Liz added: “Carol was already on Countdown, but the show hadn’t really taken off by that stage, and she had entered and won one of Andrew’s competitions on Radio Aire.

“She breezed in in her coffee-coloured leather trousers and spiky blonde-streaked hair.

“She was hardly recognisable from the girl I’d seen on the telly a couple of years before when Countdown launched Channel 4.

“Now here she was glammed up Tina Turner-style, guffawing in my kitchen.”

Carol’s style transformation inspired her: “I was soon snipping away at my own locks, applying bleach and borrowing her clothes.”

Liz also recounted how Carol’s mother, Jean Davies, 61, who died in 2017 after battling cancer, was critical to her pal’s fame.

She shared that Jean had entered Carol for the song-writing competition and spotted Yorkshire TV’s local paper advert that led to her Countdown breakthrough.

Speaking fondly about Carol’s mother, Liz added: “I’ve always envied – but not resented – the love and support that Carol’s had throughout the 27 years I’ve known them.

“Jean is quite simply one of the most generous women I’ve ever met.”
