Following Hugh Grant’s now-viral interview with Ashley Graham, Piers Morgan hosted a topic of debate on his TalkTV show centred around the Academy Awards, suggesting that it ends next year with Ricky Gervais as host. The comedian himself responded to the plea, hinting that he may be more open to the idea of Oscars hosting than he had previously seemed.
Appearing on the Monday evening episode of Piers Morgan Uncensored, the journalist chaired a debate between Kingston University chancellor Bonnie Greer and media personality Sharon Osbourne.
While discussing a variety of awkward encounters and tense moments at the 95th Academy Awards, Piers believed he had the ideal solution.
He declared: “So what we should do is kill it off. Have one more Oscars next year and we just unleash Ricky Gervais for four hours.”
As Bonnie and Sharon cheered on the idea, Piers continued: “He spray guns the entire room and then he has a deep bow and that’s it. They play the music and he’s carried off.”
The After Life star was quick to respond, writing on Twitter: “I like the bit where I’m carried off.”
While not a definitive answer, Ricky’s response certainly opened up more hope than his previous reactions.
On Sunday night, when the awards show took place, a few fans took to Twitter with some clips of the comedian’s iconic hosting stints at the Golden Globes, adding: “RT if you wish @rickygervais was hosting the #Oscars tonight.”
Ricky succinctly stomped out any hopes fans may have had, declaring: “F**k that” with a laughing emoji.
Just before the awards got underway, the writer shared some choice words in a clip from one of his famously brutal jibes as Golden Globes host, captioned: “Enjoy the Oscars.”
In the clip, Ricky stood on stage for a moment as celebrities settled into their seats before saying: “Shut up, you disgusting, pill-popping sexual deviant scum.”
The Reading-born star has served as Golden Globes host the most times in recent history, first appearing in 2010 and succinctly returning in 2011, 2012, 2016 and, most infamously, 2020.
The Office co-creator had alluded to his disinterest in returning to his post as host at the very start of his eight-minute-long monologue in 2020, as he stated: “You’ll be pleased to know this is the last time I’m hosting these awards, so I don’t care anymore.”

He went on to claim the Hollywood Foreign Press are “very, very racist” in a jibe, joked about convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and quipped about Leonardo DiCaprio seemingly preferring younger women before branding fellow British comic James Corden “a fat p***y” for his role in Cats.
Aside from Ricky’s jokes and gags, viewers were also treated to the instant reactions of the celebrities he was snubbing, many of which have since been turned into memes.
Similarly, the internet has utilised the full potential of Hugh Grant’s meme-able interview with Ashley Graham on Sunday.
While walking the champagne carpet, the Love Actually star seemed irritated at the model’s questions, only giving short and curt answers in response.
Concluding the interview, Ashley asked if the actor had fun filming his most recent role in Knives Out: Glass Onion, to which Hugh replied: “Uh almost.”
As the star walked away, fans claimed they saw him roll his eyes at Ashley and thoroughly lashed out on social media branding the actor “rude”, while Piers Morgan called Hugh “a d**k”.
Speaking on his talk show, the broadcaster shared: “To me he behaved like a d**k. He just treated Ashley Graham, I felt, with total disrespect and he pretended like the job of somebody on a red carpet, an actor at the Oscars, is not to talk to the media.”
On Monday, the model herself reacted to the awkward exchange, telling TMZ: “You know what, my mama told me to kill people with kindness, so there you go.”
