Back in 2018, Rachel Riley’s Countdown co-star Nick Hewer, 76, shared a tweet about his barn owl, who died after crashing into his bathroom mirror. The presenter told fans he had placed his dead pet in a freezer as he considered taxidermy at the time.

I’m just glad this story is finally put to rest!

Nick wrote: “RIP my lovely barn owl.

“Flew threw the bathroom window and crashed into mirror. Now in the freezer whilst I consider taxidermy. Sad.”

Nick’s tweet resurfaced yesterday, two years on from the original date it was posted.

A Twitter user wrote: “The time has come to revisit the most insane tweet ever written.”

Giving an update about the incident, Nick said this week: “I have some very sad news.

“A power cut, in my absence, shut down the freezer before I could commission a taxidermist.

“Oh dear. Apparently the pong was truly sensational. So my lovely barn owl went out with a bang – twice.”

In view of her 664,000 followers, Rachel also commented on the post.

She wrote: “Some very sad news, about Nick’s dead owl in the freezer. May he/she now rest in peace.”

In response to her comment, a fan penned: “Not something I imagine you thought you’d be writing today.”

Rachel replied: “I’m just glad this story is finally put to rest!”

Other Twitter users shared their thought about Nick’s update about the owl.

Elsewhere, Countdown fans will see Rachel return to the show’s spin-off show 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown this evening.

The new series of the show returned last week, which was filmed before the coronavirus pandemic and while Rachel was pregnant.

The mother-of-one, who is married to ex Strictly Come Dancing pro Pasha Kovalev, announced the return of the show on her Instagram page, but soon caused a stir when she said she was “back to being pregnant”.

As fans began to congratulate the star, she swiftly clarified she was referring to being pregnant on-screen at the time of filming.

The mathematician gave birth to her first baby, a daughter named Maven, back in December.

8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown airs tonight at 9pm on Channel 4.
