Following their joint royal tour of New Zealand, Camilla Parker Bowles returned to the United Kingdom, while her husband continued on his travels. And so far, Prince Charles’s solo visit to the Solomon Islands is off to a strong start.

After the prince was greeted in Honiara with dance troupes, a live pig, and a fruit tribute, Charles gave an impassioned speech to everyone who came out to see him.

Royal correspondent Emily Andrews shared video footage of Charles’s speech and revealed, “Charles gave a speech in pidgin English (the lingua franca here) to great applause at the football stadium. He’s called ‘Namber Wan (1) picannini blong Mrs Quin’ here (number one child of HM the Queen) & there are great descriptions of the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge!”

Charles referenced his family members and said (per Shropshire Star), “Queen blong yumi and Duke blong Edinburgh telling me such a good memories blong time algeter visitin this islands.” He continued, “Same with im piccinni blong me, Prince William, and wife blong him. Yufala always welkam family blong me and mifala think high o dat special bond with yufala.”

Encyclopedia.com noted that “English is the official language of the Solomons, but Pijin is spoken by about half the population.” Prince Charles’s decision to address the crowds in the Solomon Islands in their native tongue was reportedly well received, and it’s easy to see why.
