Piers Morgan ‘stunned’ to receive call from Derek Draper before Kate Garraway’s Life Stories

Piers Morgan has been able to speak to Kate Garraway’s husband Derek Draper for the first time since the political advisor suffered a life-changing bout of coronavirus.

Derek fell seriously ill with Covid-19 in March 2020, when he was placed into a coma. He is still recovering from the illness, and while has returned to the home he shares with Kate and their two children, he requires round-the-clock care nearly two years later.

Kate, who appears on Piers’ final episode of Life Stories, has continued to give updates on how her husband has been coping since he left from hospital in April.

Before filming her interview for the ITV show, Piers revealed that the Good Morning Britain host delighted him with a personal greeting from Derek on the phone.

“I was stunned,” the presenter wrote in his Daily Mail column. “’Derek!’ I cried. ‘It’s so good to talk to you!’ There was a slight pause and then I heard a familiar male voice say very clearly and strongly: ‘Hello!’

“’HELLO!’ I stammered back. ‘It’s great to hear your voice again. Keep battling, Derek – we’re all so proud of you!’”

Derek has been “rarely communicative” during the months since he returned home and so this reunion with Piers was a pleasantly surprising one.

“There have been many times when I feared I’d never hear Derek speak again,” the 56-year-old added as he recalled the experience to be a “strange and thrilling” one.

He said that Kate informed him that Derek’s carer had “burst into tears” after hearing their exchange, admitting it was “unusual to hear him interact like that”.

Kate will be the final guest to feature on Life Stories with Piers as presenter, after he revealed on Twitter that he is quitting the interview series after 12 years.

“BREAKING NEWS: I’m quitting Life Stories after 12 years and 100 shows,” Piers wrote.

“My final one will be with my fabulous friend @kategarraway and she will then present the remaining 3 planned shows of the next series as I leave ITV to host my new global daily show. It’s been a blast.”

“Kate will take over the baton on his behalf for the remaining three episodes of the forthcoming series,” an ITV spokesperson then told Metro.co.uk.

“We would like to thank Piers for over a hundred engaging, compelling and insightful Life Stories over the past 12 years where his interviewees have included the very best names in showbiz, business and politics.

“We wish him the very best of luck with all of his future ventures.”
