Paul Hollywood’s ex-wife Alex has bravely revealed she was diagnosed with skin cancer, in an honest video to her 6,900 Instagram followers.

Taking to social media, Alex, 54, said her diagnosis had been a “wake up call” and wanted to share her health news in order to raise awareness to others about the dangers of avoiding sun screen.

She wrote: “So here’s the thing.. I wanted you lot to see this because I know that we’re all scared of the 'C' word..

“I’m lucky, this is no big deal but it’s a bit of a wake up call and payback for those years I spent poolside and mucking around in boats as a Scuba Instructer, in and out of the water with little or no sunscreen!

“We all need to be more self aware, so with that in mind – I really hope you’ll all have a good look at yourselves tonight in the bathroom mirror – and if you’re not sure about something .. go see your GP!"

Speaking to the camera, Alex added: “A couple of weeks ago I went to see my GP he diagnosed me with BBC, Basal Cell Carcinoma.

"That is benign skin cancer to you and me. It did freak me out at first. A specialist sorted it out straight away and very painlessly.

“Everything's going to be fine and go back to normal."

Paul and Alex announced last November that the pair had split after 20 years of marriage.

He has since moved on with a new girlfriend Summer Monteys-Fullam, 23, who is 30 years his junior.

Speaking about their split, Alex told Prima magazine: "No one should underestimate how separation and divorce can hit you.

"I compare it to a moment where you’re driving along the motorway and then the next moment, something beyond your control happens and you’re driving in a completely different direction."

She added: "You have to give yourself time to get your head round it."
