Just days before the Queen and Prince Philip celebrate their 72nd wedding anniversary, Ms Colman will be debuting as the monarch on season three of The Crown. But what is the backstory of Olivia Colman’s own love story with her husband of 18 years?

But what is known of Ms Colman’s personal life?

Alongside the actress’s glowing professional achievements, The Crown star is also a besotted wife and mother.

She met her husband, Ed Sinclair, while at Cambridge University, where they studied alongside her future co-stars David Mitchell, Robert Webb and Peter Serafinowicz.

She spent a term studying primary teaching at Homerton College in Cambridge before studying drama at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, from which she graduated in 1999.

But the time she spent at Cambridge enabled her to meet Ed.

He initially enrolled as a law student at the university, but like his future bride, he shortly changed disciplines to do something more creative in the acting and writing field.

The pair were friends at first, but when they were aged 20, their friendship blossomed into a romance.

But this change in relationship all began when the two starred in a university production of Alan Ayckborn’s Table Manners together at Footlights Dramatics Club at Cambridge University.

However, the actress now recalls that she knew she was in love with her future husband even before this time,

She said she knew it was love at first sight with Ed.

It was also at Cambridge that she met Sinclair; cast in a student production of Alan Ayckbourn’s Table Manners, she entered the rehearsal room, and the second she saw him, in right-hand profile, she felt a thunderbolt – “I’m going to marry him.” Was it really that instantaneous?

She told The Telegraph in 2012 that she thought “I’m going to marry him” as soon as she saw him.

She said: ““A bit weird I know, but yes.

“He was gorgeous, the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen.

“I stuck with him and made him realise he could only be happy with me.

“I still feel I’m punching above my weight.

“We’ve been together 18 years now, half our lives, and we’ve loved it.”

The couple married in 2001, after they both attended Bristol Old Vic drama school together.

They went on to have three children: two sons Finn, born in 2005, Hall, born in 2007, and a daughter whose name is unknown, born in 2015.

Despite her staggering success, Olivia’s family remain most important in her life.

In 2014, when she won a BAFTA for her role as Ellie Miller in Broadchurch, she made no secret about not staying at the ceremony for long, instead opting to return home to be with her family.

At the time, she told the Guardian: “We were in our socks, drinking tea by 10 o’clock.

“As long as I have Ed and the boys, everything’s alright”.

Olivia Colman will appear on the Graham Norton Show on BBC One at 10.35pm.
