While a number of stars are making their way into the 2021 Met Gala, rapper Nicki Minaj opted to skip the prestigious event – telling fans that her choice was related to the Covid vaccine.

As the red carpet at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art began welcoming some of the world's biggest stars, Nicki took to Twitter to explain to fans that she would not be attending.

She tweeted to her 22.6 million followers: “They want you to get vaccinated for the Met. If I get vaccinated it won’t for the Met. It’ll be once I feel I’ve done enough research. I’m working on that now.

"In the meantime my loves, be safe," she continued. "Wear the mask with 2 strings that grips your head & face. Not that loose one.”

Nicki’s followers pushed back against the star's stance, with one tweeting: “Good news! Doctors already did that for you. Go get vaxed. You’re being selfish and irresponsible.”

Nicki then followed up her initial tweet by sharing a story about her cousin skipping the vaccine because “his friend got it & became impotent.”

She wrote : "My cousin in Trinidad won’t get the vaccine cuz his friend got it & became impotent. His testicles became swollen. His friend was weeks away from getting married, now the girl called off the wedding. So just pray on it & make sure you’re comfortable with ur decision, not bullied."

The NHS's information pages dedicated to vaccine safety do not list erectile dysfunction as a possible side effect.

Followers of the star jumped in her replies to encourage her to get the vaccine while others mocked the story she shared.

One tweeted: “your cousin’s friend prolly just picked up an STD but please keep going.”

A second joked: “Hmm. I could listen to what doctors and other medical professionals are saying based on data involving millions of people, or I could listen to what Nicki Minaj says her cousin told her about his friend. However can I reconcile these two nearly equally good choices?”

As fans responded to Nicki’s tweets about the vaccine, one explained that they had to get the vaccine in order to work.

Nicki responded to the comment by saying that – despite her earlier comments – she's sure she will get the vaccine herself.

The star wrote: "I know babe. A lot of countries won’t let ppl work w/o the vaccine. I’d def recommend they get the vaccine. They have to feed their families. I’m sure I’ll b vaccinated as well cuz I have to go on tour, etc."

Nicki has not made a public appearance since the birth of her son with partner Kenneth Petty in October of last year.
