Matthew Gray Gubler Movies and TV Shows: Where Else You Can See the 'Criminal Minds' Star

02/26/2021

Could we soon see more of Matthew Gray Gubler as Dr. Spencer Reid? A Criminal Minds revival is coming to Paramount+ and season 15 cast members are reportedly in talks to reprise their roles for the new show.

That’s welcome news for fans, who’ve missed Reid and the other members of the BAU since the series finale aired in February 2020. But in the meantime, you can still check out some of Gubler’s other notable film and TV roles.

‘The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou’

Gubler originally planned on a career behind the camera rather than in front of it. While he was a student at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, he landed an internship working on Wes Anderson’s 2004 movie The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou. The quirky director ended up casting him in a small part as Zissou’s intern.

“And that’s how I luckily and miraculously became a working actor,” Gubler told the Hollywood Reporter.  Soon after, he was cast as Reid in Criminal Minds.

‘(500) Days of Summer’

In 2009, Gubler had a supporting role in the indie rom-com (500) Days of Summer, which starred Zooey Deschanel as Summer and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Tom. He played Tom’s friend Paul, whom he described in a red carpet interview with Maximo TV as a “hopeless romantic.”

‘Alvin and the Chipmunks’

To be fair, you won’t see Gubler in the 2007 animated flick Alvin and the Chipmunks, but you will hear him. The actor provided the voice for Simon Seville, the brainiest of the three Chipmunks. Justin Long voices Alvin and Jesse McCartney voices Theodore. He also voiced the Simon character in the movie’s three sequels: Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel; Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked; and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip.

‘Suburban Gothic’

This comedy-horror movie from 2014 stars Gubler and Kat Dennings. Gubler is a young man named Raymond who moves back into his parents house after graduation. When a skeleton is unearthed in his family’s backyard, the ghost of the dead person is unleashed. Raymond teams up with a local bartender and former classmate (Dennings) to deal with the spirit. Fun fact: Gubler and Dennings dated for a few months back in 2007, according to Entertainment Tonight.

‘68 Kill’

Gubler plays a naive sewer worker named Chip in this dark crime drama from 2017. When Chip’s girlfriend (and occasional prostitute) Liza (AnnaLynne McCord) convinces him to help her rob their landlord, things go badly wrong, with violent consequences.

‘Dollface’

Dennings and Gubler teamed up again in the Hulu series Dollface. She stars as a woman named Jules who has to rediscover herself and her old friendships after she breaks up with her long-time boyfriend. Gubler appears as Wes, a veterinarian and Jules’ new love interest.
