Martin Lewis discusses UK energy price cap increase

Martin Lewis was out on an intended 15k run when he got the call to make an appearance on BBC News, to talk about the rise in energy prices. The money saving expert cut his exercise regime short in order to make sure he was ready in time, but joked that he may be TV’s “bit of rough” because of it.

Martin made it back home with three minutes to spare and spoke about his busy morning on Twitter, ahead of his stint on TV.

“Was out on a 15k run, got asked to do BBC News about energy at 12,” he began.

“Turned round, done 14k, arrived home thee mins before interview I’m about to do. Covered in sweat.

“I think I’ll have to be telly’s ‘bit of rough’ today,” he joked.

A short while later, he returned to the micro-blogging to give his 1.1 million followers an update.

“Right now to shower. Then get ready for ITV news.”

Following today’s news that energy prices will rise in April, Martin has a jam-packed day ahead, advising households on how to switch suppliers in order to keep the cost of their bills down.

After his lunch time appearance on ITV News, Martin also has to get ready for a radio gig.

“And I’ve got AnyQuestions on Radio 4 tonight – so have to prepare for stuff outside my area (I will be reading up on Myanmar later!),” he stated.

Many took to the comments section to share their thoughts after watching Martin in action on the BBC.

“Saw the interview. You couldn’t tell,” one person remarked.

“Watching you now. Can’t believe you can even talk after a 15k. I’m normally gasping for air after 10,” another added.

“Watched your piece, very informative and wouldn’t have known you’d just run that distance! You looked as fresh as a daisy,” a third person said.

“Great piece on @BBCNews Oh, and you looked fine!” a fourth fan added.

The segment reported that the cap will cause energy prices to rise for millions of households.

Martin advised people to head to comparison websites and switch to better fixed deals.

He said: “The most important thing to remember, and I heard the doom and gloom, and quite rightly, an extra £96 on everyone’s bills is that last thing anyone needs right now, it’s a real kick in the teeth. But the real message is, you don’t have to pay this.

“The cheapest tariffs on the market are £100 cheaper than today’s price cap, and once it goes up £190 a year cheaper.

“And they are fixes, so that means that you can lock in on that rate.”
