Kevin Clifton, a former Strictly Come Dancing professional, was part of the dance contest from 2013 to 2019 and danced with celebrities including Susanna Reid and Louise Redknapp. The pro is outspoken about his experience on the staple BBC programme, making his latest “controversial” remarks during yesterday’s edition of his self-titled podcast.

Discussing the show with his sister, Joanne Clifton, the pair reflected on the reaction received by some winners.

Glitterball champion Joanne pointed out she “does not bite back” but stressed that members of the audience must vote if they have a favourite.

She added: “If you wanted Danny [Mac] to win that much, you should have voted more.

“It’s not my fault!”

The actor lost out in the 2016 final to Ore Oduba and Joanne.

Amid laughs, Kevin responded: “Exactly, it’s not. The pros get this criticism sometimes of, like, you know, it’s not fair that they’re in the final again or whatever.

“And it’s like, well, they’re in the final because they have worked hard.

“They want to share it around with the pros.

“I’m going to say something controversial. Of course, they want to share it around with the pros and be fair to every pro and make sure that everyone gets an equal amount or whatever.

“But it’s the nature of everything – some are better than others.

“You know, some people are better dancers, or some people are better teachers, you know, like, if everything has to be fair there’s also the assumption that all the pros are the same level of everything – same level of teacher, same level of dancers, same level of performers, same level in terms of being entertaining…”

Kevin then went on to praise fellow pro Oti Mabuse, who has won the contest twice since joining in 2015.

She currently hosts a podcast, The Rhythm Of Life, and makes frequent TV appearances on shows including Steph’s Packed Lunch.

Kevin explained: “I think there’s a reason why Oti has done so well in the last couple of years – she’s very good. She’s clearly a very good teacher.”

Speaking about viewers’ speculation around potential winners, added: “Look what happened last year, they gave Bill [Bailey] to Oti and she took him to the final and won.

“Clearly she’s popular and she’s very good at what she does.”

Joanne agreed: “It’s the same kind of with Katya [Jones] and Ed Balls.

“She did brilliant there with the choreography and teaching him and the attitude that they both had together…

“You wouldn’t have thought Ed Balls was someone good.”

After quitting Strictly at the start of 2020, Kevin went on to land a number of theatre roles.

He is currently starring in the UK tour of Rock of Ages in the role of Stacee Jaxx, which he first played back in 2018.
