Katie Piper’s acid attacker, Stefan Sylvestre, was paroled in 2020, 11 years after the assault, and is now being hunted by police after going AWOL while on licence. Sylvestre was handed a life sentence in 2009 after attacking model and presenter Katie Piper with sulphuric acid.

The attacker, who had been acting on orders of Katie’s former partner, was released on licence in 2018.

He was just 19 at the time of the attack and in 2009, he was sentenced to life with a minimum of six years.

Sylvestre became eligible for parole in 2015 but his application was blocked after he was deemed unfit for release.

A further application in 2018 was successful and he was freed but ordered to stay away from Katie, 38.

In 2019 he was recalled to prison over an unrelated incident and Sylvestre got parole again in 2020 and was released after prosecution errors came to light.

However, he has been missing after being recalled to prison for breaching his licence conditions.

Sylvestre now faces additional time in prison for going on the run from authorities.

A Probation Service spokesman said on Sunday: “We are urgently working with the police to bring the offender back to prison where he’ll face longer behind bars.”

Following the attack in 2008, Katie was left suffering injuries to her face, chest, arms and hands.

The Loose Women panellist is also blind in one eye as a result of the horrific acid attack.

She previously revealed she had undergone more than 400 surgeries to reconstruct the damaged parts of her body.

Back in August, Katie told fans she was taken into emergency surgery after struggling with an “extremely painful” hole in her eye, which her husband Richard first noticed.

As her condition got worse, Katie says she was in “extreme pain” and had to be rushed to hospital.

Katie wrote on Twitter: “Emergency Operation for me! On Saturday my husband noticed a small black circle in my blind eye. I was excited thinking I had a pupil again, but by Sunday my left eye was extremely painful and couldn’t tolerate light.

“I patched it up and put it down to old injuries. I’m used to being in some level of discomfort and I went to work. By Sunday night I felt nausea and in extreme pain,” Katie concluded.

After contacting her eye specialist, Sheraz Daya, Katie found out that a hole had indeed formed in her eye.

Katie went on: “Unfortunately he confirmed the black circle was a hole in my eye and the eye had perforated. This had always been a fear that it would happen.”

The following day, Dr Daya was able to “source tissue” for Katie and gave her an emergency operation.

Sharing pictures of herself with a large bandage covering her eye, Katie announced that the surgery had gone well and she thanked the healthcare professionals who provided her with “amazing” help.

She said: “I cannot thank him and his team enough, their knowledge and expertise but also how kind and caring they all are.

“There may be some evil people in this world but there are also some pretty incredible people doing amazing things for people on a daily basis.”
