Kate Garraway’s husband Derek secretly flew 11,000 miles to Mexico for treatment

Kate Garraway has revealed her husband Derek Draper took a secret trip to Mexico in a bid to find hope amid his ongoing health battles following Covid-19.

Derek, 54, returned home in April 2021 after spending a year in hospital fighting for his life after contracting coronavirus in 2020, which has since left him battling a number of ongoing health issues.

Since coming back home, where his children Darcey, 15, and Billy, 12, are, he's needed round the clock care from both his wife and workers.

After seeing 54 year old Kate's first documentary Finding Derek on TV and seeing what he's been going through, a world-renowned US doctor contacted Kate and arranged for them to travel to see a specialist clinic in Monterrey, Mexico, after Boris Johnson lifted all restrictions.

According to The Sun, Derek is set to make his way there for a second time next month to undergo another 28-stay to allow doctors to monitor his brain, liver and lung function.

“It took weeks and weeks of planning, and when I told Derek about this place he was excited. He is just so desperate to get better – he will do anything he can to make that happen," Kate explained.

The TV presenter went on to share that she believes there's a "huge amount of hope for him to improve" but is weary of saying too much about the treatment as she doesn't want to offer "false hope to others who might be in a similar position".

She continued: “But I’m just so desperate to be able to give a happy ending – for Derek mainly, but also for everybody who asks me every day how he’s getting on.

“I’m desperate to be able to tell them he’s getting better… But of course he’s not out of the woods yet. It’s hard to say how the treatment went so far, as it’s very early in the treatment programme and he will need much more."

Kate, who recently said her other half still can't speak after his Covid-19 battle, added: “We are also still waiting for final analysis of all the scans, but I like there were a lot of positives.”

One early brain scan showed bright patches of white, according to the publication, which one neurologist said was more commonly seen in patients with vascular dementia.

However, there is yet to be an agreed upon diagnosis as experts still don't fully understand the long-term effects of Covid-19. The latest developments will be shown on Kate's new ITV documentary Caring For Derek on Tuesday night.

Before Derek was able to get on the plane and travel across the world, he had to undergo oxygen and pressure tests.

“He was quite a nervous flyer anyway. So you can imagine how draining and overwhelming this must have been for him," Kate shared. "But he was amazing, and was aware of what was going on the whole time. I’m so proud of him.”

It comes after the TV personality recently shared her belief that the illness must've had an impact on Derek's mental health.

"I mean it must be, I would have thought," she told her co-hosts. "Because if you are still unable to communicate and very challenged mobility wise and lung and all the other things then that's going to affect the mind and anxiety."

Caring for Derek will premiere on 22 February at 9pm on ITV
