Kate, 53, has been bringing up Darcey, 15, and Billy, 11, on her own since her husband Derek Draper, 53, – their father – was hospitalised with Covid in March of last year.

He remained in intensive care for more than a year, and although he returned home earlier this month, he still needs 24-hour medical care.

Kate told This Morning hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield: “Darcey at one point actually said: ‘Mum are you going to kill yourself?’ out of the blue.

“That sounds horrific, but if you know Darcey, she’s really blunt and she’ll always go to the most awful thing you can imagine and work her way back.

“She just came out with this sentence and I said: ‘Oh my God, no, why would you think that?’

“She said she wasn’t, but: ‘I just thought I better check’.”

Speaking about her children’s reaction to their father’s illness, Kate added: “They’ve been extraordinary, living with the uncertainty of possibly losing him must have been one of the hardest things.”
