Kate Garraway’s husband Derek Draper, 53, was in hospital for over a year after contracting coronavirus in March 2020. He later suffered from further health complications including problems with his liver and pancreas.

Last month, Derek returned to their family home in London and is currently under 24-hour care.

Reflecting on her spouse’s health ordeal, Kate said Prime Minister Boris Johnson, 56, reached out to her with a personal message.

She revealed: “Boris Johnson actually wrote a really, really very personal note reflecting on things that he and Derek had been involved in together and his impression of him as a person, and also thinking of me and the children.”

The Good Morning Britain presenter added she also heard from his wife-to-be Carrie Symonds, who sent her support.

Kate went on to say it must’ve been hard for her at the time when Boris was in hospital with coronavirus last year.

She added to Radio Times Magazine: “I think she has had a challenging time dealing with that.”

Reflecting on the Prime Minister also being hospitalised due to the virus last year, she went on to say: “Mercifully, his health is great now but they must have had some dark moments as well during that period.”

On Derek returning home, the mother-of-two said she and her children are getting used to a “whole new chapter” with the former lobbyist.

“I believe he will improve. I think we’ve all been changed by what we’ve been through actually,” she went on to say.

The Good Morning Britain star had previously been told it wasn’t certain whether Derek would recover after he was put into a coma.

But, he is now gradually becoming more familiar with normal life back home with Kate and their two children Darcey and Billy.

Speaking on This Morning this week, she said: “Now there are things he does which are miraculous.

“He is saying some words, but it’s not a conversation.”

She also admitted she felt “selfish” for thinking Derek wouldn’t remember who they are.

Kate added: “I dreaded that he wouldn’t remember us, which is rather selfish of me actually, because I don’t know if he’d have been in a better or worse position.

“But, it’s just that life you’ve built together and how much he loves the children and how much he loves family life and all his family and friends.

“The thought that he’d lost that, that would’ve been very hard.

“At one point, we thought we’d be caring for him at home and we’d be strangers.

“And that’s terrifying for him and strange for us.”

Kate went on to credit her children for keeping her strong during their difficult time as a family.
