Dame Judi Dench was left utterly bemused after being asked if she would consider replacing Jodie Whittaker on Doctor Who.

The veteran actor, 87, has appeared in everything from the James Bond franchise to the bizarre adaption of beloved musical Cats, but it appears there’s one role she’s not up for doing.

Dame Judi, who is currently starring in Oscar-tipped movie Belfast, appeared on Wednesday’s episode of The One Show to speak about the new biopic, which is set in Troubles-era Northern Ireland.

Appearing on the show alongside Belfast co-star Ciarán Hinds, Dame Judi was asked by a viewer, who wrote in to the show, if she would take on the role of The Doctor when Jodie departs.

After a fairly long pause where she and Ciarán shared baffled glances, she replied: ‘Well – how am I going to be able to get about?’

As the co-stars burst into giggles, host Alex Jones insisted: ‘You would have a Tardis, so you’d be fine!’

However Dame Judi, who earlier on the show said she would be up for doing ‘anything’ in the future, said about the Doctor Who role: ‘I think I might pass.’
