Jonnie Irwin has opened up on living with terminal cancer, revealing he recently celebrated his 50th birthday over six months early.

The A Place In The Sun presenter, 49, was initially given six months to live when first diagnosed with stage four lung cancer in 2020, but has outlived doctor’s predictions with the help of medication, radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Dad-of-three Jonnie, who recently returned to work, spoke about his birthday celebrations and how his cancer has impacted his parenting abilities in a new interview.

Speaking about how he's doing at the moment, he said: “I’m weak now, fragile and my memory is terrible… but I’m still here."

Speaking to The Sun, Jonnie recalled how he was recently playing a game of football with his eldest son Rex, three, and grew frustrated as he "couldn't get near the ball".

"I tried to play football with Rex the other day and was in goal and I couldn’t get near the ball. It was so frustrating," he told the publication.

Jonnie, who is also dad to two-year-old twins Rafa and Cormac with wife Jessica Holmes, went on to say he used to be "very sporty" but suddenly things have changed and he felt like a "granddad" during the game with his son.

The TV presenter is due to turn 50 in November but revealed he celebrated his milestone birthday early, hosting a huge bash with 170 guests including fellow celebs such as his co-star Jasmine Harman and ex-England cricketer Andrew Caddick.

He branded the party a "great night" and expressed how grateful he is for his family and friends who attended the bash, with many travelling from all over to celebrate with him.

Jonnie's latest update comes after he recently made a surprise return to A Place In The Sun as he appeared at A Place In The Sun Live in Manchester on 5 March.

One day prior to his TV gig, Jonnie took to Instagram to share a snap of the outfit he had picked out for his surprise appearance.

He captioned the photo: "Selecting wardrobe for @aplaceinthesunofficial LIVE Tomorrow in Manchester. It’s an early start and as I’m not fit enough to run for the train atm I’m prepping the night before.

"My wife can’t quite believe it! Cold weather calls for wool, wool, and more wool," he added.

He then teased a reunion with fellow A Place In The Sun host Jasmine Harman, writing: "It’s also are rare thing for @jasmineharman and myself to both be there on a Sunday so please coming along and we’ll hopefully see you there. @mcr_central."
