The Absolutely Fabulous actress is considered a national treasure by many due to her campaign work and regular appearances on TV. The 74-year-old is also known to have a relationship with some members of the Royal Family, including the Queen. However, in a recent snub, Lumley took aim at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex after their tell-all chat with Oprah Winfrey.

When asked if she had followed the Megxit saga, since Meghan and Harry left senior roles within the Royal Family, Lumley said: “Not really.”

The actress admitted she found it “all ghastly” and seemed unimpressed by their interview ‒ which aired on CBS in the US and ITV in the UK.

Lumley also described Netflix’s show The Crown as “ghastly” and protested that “it was mostly made up”.

She told the Telegraph’s Chopper’s Politics podcast: “Lots of people love it… but lots of people don’t know it’s made up, which is awful.”

Lumley refused to watch the royal drama, which show creator Peter Morgan has defended as being based on historical events.

She didn’t agree with The Crown because she thought it was unfair to “imagine” how people speak to one another in private settings.

The Ab Fab star has had a number of encounters with the royals and gave insider information into what it was like to stay overnight at Buckingham Palace.

Lumley praised the Queen after divulging several secrets about how guests are treated in the royal residence.

She branded Her Majesty the “make-do-and-mend Queen” after revealing she reused and repaired old furnishings.

In 2019, she told Good Housekeeping: “People say, ‘You must need new things?’ when you go to stay at Buckingham Palace.

“Guess what? You eat off second-hand knives and forks.”

Lumley also revealed that bedding used by guests was not brand new either and the Queen upcycled “moth-eaten” bedsheets into cushion covers.

She explained: “The bed you sleep in is second hand, the bed linen is second hand.”

Lumley was thrilled by the discovery after regularly trying to encourage the public to use sustainable materials and avoid single-use plastics.

She noted that the public may be surprised and unaware of the Buckingham Palace secret she shared.

The star continued: “And that’s Buckingham Palace!

“So if it’s good enough for the Queen, treasures, it’s good enough for me.”

Lumley’s claims were backed-up by Adam Helliker, who has written a number of books about the Royal Family.

In 2019, he told Fabulous magazine that the Queen took a number of items and repurposed them for other residences.

They included “continuing to get good use from the bedspreads she rescued from the former Royal Yacht Britannia”.

The Queen nabbed the bedding for royal residences when the sea vessel was decommissioned in 1997.

Mr Helliker said it was “heartening to learn that the Queen” continued to “espouse frugalness in her royal households”.

He was especially impressed by her “mend-and-make-do” attitude because we live in such “a materialistic world”.

Lumley also revealed she cheekily asked Prince Philip if he would leave her one of his paintings in her will.

She told Phillip Schofield that the Duke was “very, very interested in art” and “a fine painter” in a 2016 ITV documentary.

Lumley “loved” a painting he showed her and was later told the royal had “done it himself”.

She explained that he “was dismissive” of his own artistic flair, during the show When Phillip Met Prince Philip: 60 Years Of The Duke Of Edinburgh’s Awards.

Lumley recalled a question she asked the royal: “I said, ‘Sir, I wonder if when you shuffle off the mortal coil whether that would find its way into my hands.’”

Schofield yelled “What!” in shock, before the actress admitted: “I don’t know how I had the nerve!”
