Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond set to go on an epic journey in Vietnam and Cambodia for feature-length special The Grand Tour Presents: Seamen

Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond are set to appear in the first of a series of specials called The Grand Tour Presents: Seamen.

The feature-length episode sees the captivating trio head off on an adventure across the waters, where they will captain three very different types of vessels.

Heading out on a 800km journey through Vietnam and Cambodia that begins Tonlé Sap Lake, the trio have to weave their way through a series of challenges and unexpected mishaps as they make their way to the Mekong Delta.

Exciting: Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond are set to go on an epic journey in Vietnam and Cambodia for feature-length special The Grand Tour Presents: Seamen

To go on this epic adventure, Jeremy heads out on a Vietnam-era PBR (Patrol Boat River), which most famously appeared in Apocalypse Now.

Richard is set to channel his inner Don Johnson by setting off on a Miami Vice style speedboat, while James will head out on a classic 1939 wooden river cruiser.

Of doing the series of specials, Jeremy explained on Saturday: ‘There is no question that people prefer the specials when we whizz off and go and do something incredible, compared to the studio side of it.

‘The other problem we have is time. Doing 12 or 13 shows a year is phenomenally time-consuming and it was sort of wiping us out, so now we can just concentrate on the specials and make them even better than they were.’

Inspired to go on the journey by a photo of the Mekong Delta, Jeremy added: ‘The idea I had, which was to re-conquer the Spratly Islands, simply wasn’t going to be possible because we would have been killed by the Chinese.

‘It turns out the Chinese get very shoot-y when you turn up in the Spratly Islands so we decided we didn’t really want to be shot.

‘Then I went to Vietnam and Cambodia for three months and I suddenly had a new idea, and it all worked out. Except, it wasn’t quite as I’d planned because of the weather.’

While Richard went on to discuss the group’s dynamic, which has always been a draw to the show, and what it’s like this time around.

‘Even though we’d had a bit of a break, as soon as we met up off camera it was as though we’d never left each other,’ he said.

‘As soon as we three get on camera together it is like we have never been away, it is like a parallel world that we step into. It’s weirdly comforting although they’re bloody irritating.

Brutally honest: James claimed the trip was ‘utter misery’ as he discussed his expectations for the special, as it wasn’t ‘like a lovely boating holiday’

‘There are always two of us picking on one of us. It’s evenly spread: I think one of us usually needs a good kicking and the other two are there and happy to delivery it.’

James went on to say of his expectations of the trip: ‘I thought it would be fun to learn about them and I knew the scenery would be very beautiful.

‘I thought it would be very tranquil and like a lovely boating holiday but it didn’t work out like that at all. It was utter misery.’
