Music legend Sir Elton John, 74, and his husband David Furnish, 59, have shared which surprising activity has had their son Zachary hooked these days. David spoke about their son’s “obsession” with a certain sport that has stunned them, given the amount of time children typically spend on their screens nowadays.

In a candid interview, David revealed that Zachary has become addicted to fishing.

The revelation becomes all the more unusual when taking into consideration that Elton has never been fishing in his life, whilst David has “barely” picked up a fishing rod.

Nevertheless, the parents are delighted to see their son engrossed in a hobby that reduces his time spent staring at a screen.

David said: “Zachary, our oldest, has become completely obsessed with fishing.

“He’s done lake fishing, he’s done sea fishing but he hasn’t done fly fishing so we’re able to get a couple of days up north (Canada) to introduce him to fly fishing which he absolutely loved.

“I love that he’s embraced fly-fishing so much – there’s so many distractions for kids today with phones, iPads and video games, internet and television and everything.”

The star went on to express his admiration for his son’s dedication to the hobby, despite having no influence from his parents.

“I’ve caught some fish off a dock when I was ten in Canada, that’s the extent of my fishing experience and Elton I don’t think has even fished at all,” David admitted in an interview with The Mirror.

David went on to add that Zachary had picked up the fishing bug from “different people who have come across his path”.

He explained that his son consulted everything from YouTube fishing tutorials, to angling magazines.

“He’s learned a lot about it on YouTube, there’s angling magazines you can get in the newsagents here in Britain so he’s picked up a lot of those and he’s just dived into all aspects of it, really researching it and he knows it all so well now. It’s amazing to see,” he said.

The star admitted that he was overjoyed to see his son out and enjoying nature, rather than just being stuck inside all day.

“The fact he’s run into this and enjoys it so much, I’m just thrilled with because it’s outdoors, it’s the fresh air and it’s all really meditative to get the patience and the joy out of standing and catching fish in any environment,” he said.

The proud dad also described fishing as his son’s “happy place” and added that he really had “taken it all on himself”.

Elton and David are parents to 10-year-old Zachary and his younger brother, eight-year-old Elijah.

The pair have been together since 1993 and entered into a civil partnership on December 21 2005, the first day that civil partnerships could be performed in England.

After same-sex marriage became legal in England and Wales in March 2014, they retroactively converted their civil partnership into a marriage and marked the occasion with a ceremony in Windsor, Berkshire, on 21 December 2014.

David and Elton welcomed Zachary via surrogate in December 2010 and Elijah in 2013, thanks to the same surrogate.

Elton is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with more than fifty Top 40 hits in the UK Singles Chart and over 300 million records sold.

His husband David is a Canadian filmmaker and former advertising executive.
