How Marcus Samuelsson’s mom helped his book sales

Marcus Samuelsson recalled an early book signing when he needed some help from his mom to move copies of the tome.

The Red Rooster chef told us that when he published one of his early books, “My mom comes to my very first book signing and she says to me, ‘There’s nobody here? Why people are not coming here?’”

As fans began to trickle in, “I’m working and signing books, and my mom goes to stand by the register. She wanted to check to see if they are paying for the books.”

But that wasn’t enough. “When they paid, she wanted to do a post-interview … ‘Why are you buying my son’s book?’ And I’m like, ‘Mom, let them go … they can buy the book and leave.”

His books include memoirs “Yes, Chef” and “Make It Messy” as well as “New American Table” and “The Red Rooster Cookbook: The Story of Food and Hustle in Harlem.”

Samuelsson and fellow celeb chef Scott Conant teamed up to host a Thanksgiving-themed event for Resorts World Catskills this month. Conant told us of the behind-the-scenes issues of running a restaurant today, “I may get in trouble for saying this, politicians try to dip their fingers in the industry and they don’t know how to run a business themselves.”
