How Irina Shayk Stays Authentic Around Her Daughter with Bradley Cooper

In BAZAAR.com‘s summer digital cover story, Irina Shayk is all about keeping it real. That doesn’t quite mean telling all about Bradley Cooper, but it does apply to how she acts in front of their daughter, two-year-old Lea de Seine. The Russian model and mother of one noted the importance of authenticity as a parent: “You have to be really truly yourself for your kids, otherwise you’re living in a lie.”

For Shayk, 33, being herself means not conforming to the traditional image of motherhood. “Tell me one reason why, just because you’re a mother, you need to wear a longer skirt,” she told BAZAAR. “No! I don’t believe in that. I really don’t.” She added, “Why should you have to change who you are and how you feel just because you become a mother?”

The model—who was raised by her mother, sister, and two grandmothers in Yemanzhelinsk, Russia—knows what it’s like to have women run the household. “Women are the ones who can handle everything,” she said. “Women can raise the kids, women can do the job, and when she’s back, she can cook and clean and do the heavy work too!”

She added, “We never had men around. You have to learn how to put a nail in the wall, how to hang the curtains.”

Her daughter Lea de Seine has some powerful women in the family to look up to.
