Hillary Clinton’s New Job May Surprise You

02/26/2021

Hillary Clinton has stayed largely out of the spotlight since Joe Biden took office, reacting to his win in November by sharing on Instagram in part, “It’s a history-making ticket, a repudiation of Trump, and a new page for America. ⁣Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen. Onward, together.” But now, the former presidential nominee is back in a new and unexpected capacity — no, not as a cabinet member under Biden. In fact, this job has nothing to do with elected or appointed office. Instead, Clinton is turning a passion into a position, penning a new mystery novel with one of her favorite authors (via The Hollywood Reporter).

It’s well known that Clinton is a fan of the mystery genre (via Electric Lit) and has long admired Louise Penny, whose past works include The Cruelest Month and The Brutal Telling. Meanwhile, Penny thinks very highly of Clinton. The two ladies are realizing a mutual dream to work together on a new novel, State of Terror, which weaves Clinton’s unique experience into its plot line about a conspiracy against the United States government (via Vulture).

The former Secretary of State said in a statement about Penny, “I’ve relished every one of her books and their characters as well as her friendship. Now we’re joining our experiences to explore the complex world of high stakes diplomacy and treachery. All is not as it first appears.” Meanwhile, Penny enthused she could not “say yes fast enough” to the opportunity to work with Clinton.

What we know about Clinton's role in writing the novel

THR notes the amount of money Clinton will make co-writing State of Terror is unknown, but it’s clear her point of view is a valuable part of the book, with Penny saying, “Before we started, we talked about her time as secretary of State. What was her worst nightmare? State of Terror is the answer.” She also shared that getting the chance to go inside the White House was thrilling.

Meanwhile, this is not the politician’s first foray into writing. Her non-fiction books include What Happened, and Hard Choices (via Amazon). It’s also interesting to note that her husband Bill Clinton has set the precedent for teaming up with a well-known author on a fiction work, having co-written two books with James Patterson (via The New York Times).

The first book,The President Is Missing will be followed up by The President’s Daughter, with a planned release date of June 2021. Hillary’s book will hit store shelves in October.
