1996 brought reality into the world of the Looney Tunes with Michael Jordan starring in the highest grossing basketball film of all time: Space Jam. The 90s nostalgia classic tells a story of Jordan helping our childhood favorites, the Looney Tunes (Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, etc.), defeat the Monstars in a game of basketball of course. 25 years later, the Tune Squad has new challengers–the Goon Squad–and a new team captain–LeBron James.

The sequel, Space Jam: A New Legacy, kicks off when a rogue artificial intelligence (played by Don Cheadle) traps the NBA star and his son, Dom, in a digital multiverse. Upon arrival into the digitized land, James’ son is taken from him and the only way to get him back is to defeat a team of charged-up basketball champions, the Goon Squad. Like Jordan, James finds himself having to team up with the Tune Squad. But this time, the consequence for losing the high-stakes game is the deletion of each of the Looney Tunes as characters.

Directed by Malcolm D. Lee (Girls Trip), the live action/animated sports comedy film arrives in theaters and HBO Max on Friday, July 16. If you plan to watch the sequel at home, you will need to get the ad-free subscription of HBO Max which costs $14.99/month. You’ll want to act soon though. Theatrical releases from Warner Bros. remain on HBO Max for 30 days only, making the deadline August 15.
