Hulu’s Reservation Dogs is a coming-of-age comedy series following four Native American teenagers who get in trouble. A lot. The first two episodes of the series dropped on August 9, and there’s three more on the way shortly.

Created by Sterlin Harjo and Taiki Watiti (who’s set to direct the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder), the show is set in Oklahoma and according to Deadline is based on Harjo’s experiences growing up in the state. Hopefully without the petty crimes, though.

Although it’s set in Oklahoma, like other television shows, Reservation Dogs could be filmed anywhere, depending on what’s convenient for production. The show is set in a fictional town, so there’s no need to be entirely accurate. But it turns out that Harjo, Watiti, and others tried to be as close to their fictional location as possible.

Where is Reservation Dogs filmed?

According to Tulsa World, the show was shot in various locations across Oklahoma including Tulsa, Okmulgee, Sand Springs, Beggs, Inola, and Terlton. In an interview with Tusla World, Harjo says he filmed primarily in Okmulgee because it embodied the Midwest. It’s also a rural area close to Tulsa, where cast and crew could stay during filming.

“There was a lot of development, but it’s not like a city, so it feels like a rural town and it’s close to Tulsa,” Harjo says. “My frame of reference was Holdenville and Wewoka, towns like that. Okmulgee has that vibe, but it’s closer to Tulsa.”

Plus, in its soundtrack Reservation Dogs featured artists based in the state. In a way, it looks like Reservation Dogs really is a love letter to Oklahoma. And if Hulu decides to give the show a season 2, there’s plenty more love (and money) coming into the state.
