Harry and Meghan Are Quitting Social Media for Good

01/10/2021

Don’t expect Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to return to social media, like, ever. Harry and Meghan announced their decision to quit their roles as senior members of the royal family on Instagram and continued to use their official account, Sussex Royal. In March 2020, they posted a goodbye message.

“As we can all feel, the world at this moment seems extraordinarily fragile,” they captioned the post. “Yet we are confident that every human being has the potential and opportunity to make a difference—as seen now across the globe, in our families, our communities and those on the front line—together we can lift each other up to realise the fullness of that promise.”

Now, a source close to the royal family tells The Times of London that it’s “very unlikely” that Meghan and Harry will have an online presence because of the“hate” they’ve received. In October 2020, Meghan shared her experience with cyberbullying on the Teenage Therapy podcast.

“I’m told that in 2019 I was the most trolled person in the entire world, male or female,” she said during the episode. “Now, eight months of that I wasn’t even visible, I was on maternity leave or with a baby. But what was able to just be manufactured and churned out, it’s almost unsurvivable, that’s so big, you can’t think of what that feels like, because I don’t care if you’re 15 or 25, if people are saying things about you that aren’t true, what that does to your mental and emotional health is so damaging.”
