In her role as Princess of Wales, and formerly the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton is expected to look both "contemporary" and "timeless" says royal expert Tessa Dunlop.

Speaking to OK!, Tessa has discussed how Kate maintains her fashionable and chic look, and although she may have been accused of "dressing older" in the past, she now looks every inch a queen-in-waiting.

Describing Kate's fashionable looks Tessa told us: "She used to dress old for her age and now everyone thinks she’s really chic but she hasn't changed her style that much, it’s timeless, its consistency, and that’s trying to be a queen."

She continued: "Monarchy is an institution that really upholds tradition, that's the great contradiction of it. In many ways, in a progressive era, so Kate has to look contemporary, but also timeless.

“She’s in the gym every morning and even her figure hasn’t really changed. Her face hasn’t really got any older, her look has kind of frozen”.

Exercise is nothing new to the Princess, who took part in rowing, tennis, and skiing during her years at the University of St Andrews.

She now appears to enjoy running and CrossFit, which is a high-intensity exercise that combines elements including gymnastics, kettlebell and weightlifting.

Kate also recently beat husband William in a virtual endurance spin race in the Italian Dolomites – while wearing high-heeled boots.

Kate and William joined an exercise class at Aberavon leisure and fitness centre in Aberavon, South Wales during a royal visit.

They were challenged to see who could cycle the farthest in 45 seconds while riding uphill in the Italian mountains.

Kate won a small trophy after emerging victorious from the Tour de Aberavon – although the distance she won by was not revealed.

Entering the cycling room, William apologised to the cyclists and said: “Sorry for ruining your spin class.”

Before climbing on to his bike, the William joked to his wife: “You have got high heels on.”

Mum-of-three Kate, who was wearing a cream top, checked skirt and black boots, said: “Not sure I am dressed for this.”

During the race, Kate adjusted the gears and laughed: “Can I make it harder?”

After finishing, William, who was breathing deeply, joked: “Talk to you in a minute.”

Tessa has also discussed how Kate's "timeless" look has seen her become something of a continuity figure within the royal family, and a reassuring figure for the country at large.

She said: "I think she's the continuity figure Kate, in a time when a lot of people are not liking Megan and Harry and Andrew.

"She knows about the imaging around the timelessness, so for years Kate looked like she was dressing too old for age and now it looks about right what it is timeless, unchanging, constant, Kate.

"Britain’s going through a rough time but there’s Kate, there she is supporting Wales as she should be at the rugby, or there she is doing the right thing at the beginning of the term with her three children, she’s a reassuring presence".
