Tom Hanks' fans are hoping he'll be reunited with his old pal Wilson from Cast Away as he battles coronavirus, and have even mocked up a snap of what it would look like.

The Oscar winner and his wife, singer Rita Wilson, both 63, are the first celebrities to test positive for the deadly virus.

He has assured fans he's taking all the safety requirements he can and that he and his wife will get through this one day at a time.

But hopefully he's not going through it alone.

A comedy news site reported that staff at the Gold Coast hospital where he and his wife are in quarantine have presented him with a volleyball copy of his old friend Wilson.

In 2000 movie Cast Away, Tom's character Chuck Noland is stranded on a deserted island with nobody but a volleyball with a bloody handprint for a face to keep him company.

And even Wilson abandons him, floating away in the ocean in heartbreaking scenes.

In a mocked-up photo, Tom is seen smiling as he poses in the hospital, holding the volleyball up next to him.

The real photo was taken at a hockey match in 2015.

The actor revealed last night that he and his wife had tested positive for coronavirus.

He had been filming a new Elvis Presley biopic in Australia when they both began feeling ill.

He said in a statement: "Hello, folks. Rita and I are down here in Australia. We felt a bit tired, like we had colds, and some body aches. Rita had some chills that came and went. Slight fevers too.

"To play things right, as is needed in the world right now, we were tested for Coronavirus, and were found to be positive.

"Well, now. What to do next? The Medical Officials have protocols that must be followed.

"We Hanks’ will be tested, observed, and isolated for as long as public health and safety requires. Not much more to it than a one-day-at-a-time approach, no?

"We’ll keep the world posted and updated. Take care of yourselves! Hanx!"

The couple's son, actor Colin Hanks, also released a statement.

He said: "We are so grateful for the outpouring of support from everyone. My parents are receiving excellent care in Australia and are doing well (and in good spirits) given the circumstances.

"Despite the fact that I'm in LA and haven't seen them in over three weeks, we have been in constant contact and am confident that they will make a full recovery."

Chet filmed a video, telling his followers that it was true his parents had coronavirus, but said that they both feel fine and are taking the necessary health precautions. He said he appreciated everyone's concern but felt everything was going to be okay.
