But fans will need deep pockets as the “eyelet” outfit has a starting bid of £275,000. A matching cape is set to fetch at least £29,000. The outfit was famously worn by the singer during his triumphant gigs in Madison Square Gardens, New York, in 1972. For the last three decades it has been in the hands of a private collector.

It is being sold by Kruse GWS Auctions in California at an Artefacts of Hollywood and Music sale on September 4.

The 320 lots also include Marilyn Monroe’s black sleeveless “Wiggle” dress from the 1950s and Audrey Hepburn’s black woven wide-brim hat.

Lead auctioneer Dame Brigitte Kruse said: “The sheer volume of iconic pieces of memorabilia from legends such as Elvis and so many other icons from the Golden Era are incredible.

“This collection chronicles so many important moments in entertainment history.”

The Elvis jumpsuit and cape was designed by the renowned costume specialist Bill Belew for Elvis’s first Madison Square Garden performance.

The shows quickly became a sell-out, and the outfit was one of the most photographed of Presley’s career.

Bill also designed other Elvis costumes before the star died at his Graceland home in Memphis in 1977, aged 42.
