EastEnders’ Danielle Harold and Corrie lead winners at 2023 British Soap Awards

06/03/2023

The best and brightest stars of the UK’s favourite soaps were out in force on Saturday evening as the British Soap Awards once again got underway for the 24th year.

From Emmerdale to Coronation Street, EastEnders to Hollyoaks, there was no shortage of talent in this year’s nail biting string of nominations.

But after a close run battle the results are now in, with Coronation Street dominating the British Soap Awards with a whopping six wins in total.

This in turn was closely followed by EastEnders who bagged four awards, while Hollyoaks scooped two.

In a surprising turn of events however, Doctors and Emmerdale bagged just one award each after failing to win over the support of judges or the general public.

Among the most highly sought after awards this year was the Best Leading Performer, which ultimately went to EastEnders actress Danielle Harold for her heartbreakingly authentic portrayal of battling terminal cancer as Lola Pearce.

The award held a special poignancy to Danielle, as her final scenes had aired on the soap just days before she bagged the coveted award – something which allowed her to end her time on EastEnders on a high.

Accepting the award, Danielle said: “This isn’t for me. This is definitely for every single person who’s worked with me along the way who has been directly affected by brain tumours, people who are suffering from brain tumours.

“Their time has been so precious to them and even more to me and I can’t thank all of you enough for helping me.”

There was also plenty to celebrate over on Coronation Street, as the ITV soap scooped the award for best single episode, with their devastating portrayal of an acid attack earlier this year.

It was thanks to this performance, that star Charlotte Jordan was able to take home the award for Best Dramatic Performance, after she portrayed stalking victim Daisy Midgley, the intended target for the cruel acid attack.

This year the show was helmed by Jane McDonald, who stepped in to host the proceedings after Phillip Schofield stepped down from the role amid the fallout from his affair scandal.

The ceremony, at The Lowry in Salford Quays, was presented by Jane after she stepped in to replace Schofield when he quit ITV amid a furore over his extramarital affair with a younger male colleague.

Wearing a gold sequinned floor-length dress, one of just several outfit changes for the night, Jane told the audience: “I’ve got to say I am a massive fan of the soaps so this is my dream job.

“Welcome to you all, thank you for having me.”

As the awards came to a close, she said: “I’m off for a knees-up with all my favourite soapstars, I’m so excited.”

Despite the change in presenter, the awards kicked off without a hitch, with many of our favourite stars in attendance quick to praise Jane for her impeccable hosting skills.

Hollyoaks actress Nikki Sanderson said fellow cast member Ross Adams, who plays Scott Drinkwell, was particularly pleased with the new host.

She said: “Ross Adams is like her biggest fan ever, as soon as he found out, he was completely fangirling about it. So it’s really exciting for us that she’s doing it but really exciting for Ross.”

Ross was even able to get up close and personal to his favourite when she sat on his knee to deliver a link.
