Eamonn Holmes hits out at fellow presenters: ‘Too many have graduated from kids TV’

08/08/2019

Eamonn Holmes, 59, didn’t hold back as he slammed presenters who work their way up from kids TV, saying he dislikes overly cheery dispositions in hosts. “The people I would sack in TV straight away are presenters that come on a show, usually local news, and say, ‘Hello, good evening and welcome to the show!’” he said, putting on a faux sunny voice. “Too pleased to be there,” the This Morning favourite insisted. “If you’re too pleased to be there, get out. You shouldn’t be there.”

Speaking to Kate Thornton, 46, on her podcast, White Wine Question Time, he added: “My humour tends to be cynical, sarcastic sort of humour, not kiddies’ TV presenting.

“Too many presenters on TV nowadays have graduated from kids’ TV and it shows. That’s my view.”

Launching into a rant about the phenomenon, Eamonn continued: “If you got on an aeroplane and your captain said to you, ‘Hello! Good morning to you! We’re going to Alicante today and fingers crossed it’s going to be great!

“‘We should be flying at a height of 36,000 feet. I’m so excited and I hope you’re excited too!’ I would be thinking, get me off this,” he vented.

“All you wanna hear is the pilot saying, ‘Good morning to you,’” Eamonn said, this time affecting a more serious, calmer tone. “‘This is BA flight 4146. We’re taking off to Alicante shortly. It should be a good journey, now fasten your seatbelt and enjoy the ride.’

“That’s all I wanna hear. ‘Thank you and goodnight!’ That’s the way Des Lytham introduced his sport programmes and things. Absolute master.

“All these people who are so giddy, too over-the-moon for being there,” he said, imitating: “‘From me and all the team here…’ I don’t see all the team, I only see you!

“You’re the only person there, why are you mentioning all the team?!”

Eamonn and his co-presenter and wife Ruth Langsford, 59, are currently standing in for Phillip Schofield, 57, and Holly Willoughby, 38, weekdays on This Morning while the pair enjoy a break over the summer holidays.

Both Holly and Phillip started out in kids’ TV, with the former getting her big break on ITV’s Ministry of Mayhem in the mid-2000s.

Phillip, meanwhile, became the first in-vision continuity presenter for children’s BBC in the mid-1980s.

He stayed in children’s TV until the 1990s, when he moved over to adult-oriented programmes.

Elsewhere, Eamonn Holmes told This Morning viewers to “lighten up” after being accused of “sexualising” his co-star Rochelle Humes, 30.

He faced a backlash after his response to the presenter’s nude shoot for Women’s Health.

Ahead of her style segment, Eamonn introduced Rochelle by saying: “Hopefully doing the same, Rochelle. Hopefully doing the same in the studio…”

“No, no, no,” she replied. “Don’t worry, I won’t put anyone off their breakfast.

“We’re talking clothes today,” she continued, moving on. “We’re talking flashing the flesh a little bit.”

However, one viewer took to Twitter to suggest Eamonn was “sexualising” the star, saying: “Is @EamonnHolmes putting it on? Just watched him sexualise @RochelleHumes hoping for ‘comes on like that!!!’… while next to his wife… as she is to talk about her recent nude photoshoot lol like SURELY this isn’t real.”(sic)

Another fan tweeted: “Also talking about the cleaning, and that [Ruth] should have thanked him for cleaning? Like in 2019, I highly doubt it is HER house it’s there!!!”

Eamonn later responded, writing back to the two comments in view of his 994,000 followers, saying: “Hey guys lighten up please — we were having a laugh.”

This Morning airs weekdays at 10.30am on ITV.
