David Beckham and Captain Sir Tom Moore had a socially distanced meet-up and it’s a pairing we didn’t know we needed.

The Three Lions icon presented Captain Tom – who raised more than £32 million for NHS Charities Together by walking laps of his garden – with a framed shirt after he was chosen as an honorary captain for the Lionhearts squad.

Many nominated the 100-year-old for the initiative which aims to pay homage to 23 inspirational individuals.

Fitting considering Captain Tom initially had a goal of raising £1,000.

In the absence of international football this summer after the postponement of UEFA EURO 2020, England’s focus will be on creating a squad of everyday heroes that have gone above and beyond during these challenging times.

So Captain Tom was an obvious and important choice.

David, 45, showed up in his best suit as he presented the personalised framed shirt from an appropriate distance.

Captain Tom, on the other hand, sat on a chair inside his house with all the glass doors opened wide.

‘I’m delighted to have been chosen to captain this incredibly special squad of Lionhearts,’ Captain Sir Tom said.

‘It was wonderful to meet and learn more about the initiative from David and I’m looking forward to sharing the inspirational stories of my team – something the whole nation can be proud of.’

David also said: ‘It was such an honour to meet Captain Sir Tom, and to thank him on behalf of The FA for his incredible fundraising achievement to support our NHS.

‘He really is a national hero and I can’t think of anyone more deserving to captain the Lionhearts squad.’
