Christine McGuinness admits ‘I was pretending to be someone else’ when married to Paddy

Christine McGuinness has confessed that she was “pretending to be something else” during her marriage to her presenter husband Paddy McGuinness.

The 34 year old, who was diagnosed with autism in 2021, announced her split from the Top Gear star in July last year when the pair put out a joint statement.

Since then the former couple have remained friends and have continued to live together to keep a routine for their three children – nine year old twins Leo and Penelope and Felicity, seven – who all have autism.

And Christine has opened up about an element of her own autism, known as masking, in a new interview.

Revealing she was playing a role and trying to be the “perfect wife”, she told Psychologies Magazine: “I’d become expert at playing a role to try to fit in.

“I’d always wanted to be a wife so once I met Patrick, I fully went into ‘perfect wife’ mode. You know: ‘I’ll stay in, I’ll cook and clean and make sure I’m the best wife I can be’.

“I was always pretending to be something else rather than simply just me. That’s all part of masking.”

In the interview Christine also told how she only left the house a handful of times when she first married Paddy, 49, to avoid social situations.

Confirming the end of their 11-year marriage last year, Christine and Paddy said in a statement: "We hadn’t planned on sharing this publicly until we were ready but after the lack of privacy surrounding our personal life, we feel left with no other option but to clarify.

“A while ago we took the difficult decision to separate but our main focus as always is to continue loving and supporting our children.

“This was not an easy decision to make but we’re moving forward as the best parents we can be for our three beautiful children.

“We’ll always be a loving family, we still have a great relationship and still live happily in our family home together.

“We hope this now draws a line under anymore unwanted and unnecessary intrusion into our private life.

“Although we work in the public eye we ask kindly if you could respect our wishes for privacy on this matter. We’ll be making no further comment.”

Just four months after they announced their separation, former Real Housewives of Cheshire star Christine was pictured locking lips with her pal Chelcee Grimes at Winter Wonderland in London’s Hyde Park.

The star is yet to publicly address the kiss.
