Britney Spears Was “Crying and Laughing” On the Day her Conservatorship Ended

Britney Spears is ecstatic about the end of her conservatorship.

The pop star regained control over her life when Judge Brenda Penny announced last Friday that the 13-year legal arrangement–which held her under the personal, professional, and financial control of her father–would come to an end. The decision to end the arrangement came after Spears gave an emotional court address last June, detailing her trauma under the conservatorship, and just ahead of her 40th birthday next month.

According to People, Spears was overjoyed after hearing the news Friday, calling it “the best day of her life.”

“She was crying and laughing at the same time,” a source told the outlet. “It was hard for her to understand that it’s over after so many years. She is so grateful for everyone that has helped her.”

The “Stronger” singer also celebrated the news on social media, posting an emotional message alongside a video of her fans celebrating outside of the courthouse where the decision was made Friday.

“Good God I love my fans so much it’s crazy !!! I think I’m gonna cry the rest of the day !!!! Best day ever … praise the Lord … can I get an Amen ???? #FreedBritney,” she wrote.

After the hearing, her lawyer Mathew Rosengart described the day as a “monumental day” for the pop star.

“What’s next for Britney is up to one person — and this is the first time we can say this in a decade. It’s up to Britney,” he said. “Britney, as of today, is a free woman. I thank her for her courage and poise and power and for our relationship.”
