Life is always better on island time — especially when you’re relaxing on your very own private island. Sir Richard Branson was one of the first celebrities to buy his own slice of paradise back in the 1970s.

Now, buying your own exotic island is a popular trend among A-listers and other famous faces with bank accounts who can handle such a massive purchase. Here are 10 celebrities who own their own private island.

10. Ricky Martin

The Livin’ La Vida Loca singer purchased Ilha do Maia in 2008, a 19.7-acre island that is a renowned marine conservation district on the Brazilian coastline. Located two hours north of Rio, Martin’s island looks like a fortress, with 12 cannons and watchtowers outside of his large Portuguese colonial-style villa.

9. Lenny Kravitz

The four-time Grammy winner owns a private island in the Bahamas, where he built a recording studio. However, instead of living in a tropical mansion, Kravitz reportedly sleeps in a trailer.

8. Johnny Depp

While filming the original Pirates of the Caribbean, Depp fell in love with the Bahamas. He proceeded to buy Little Hall Pond Cay in 2004 for $3.6 million, an island that features 45 acres of dunes, a palm-lined lagoon, and secluded white sand.

According to Vanity Fair, Depp learned how to buy an island from the late Marlon Brando. He even has a beach named after the Godfather star. Depp also has a beach named after journalist Hunter S. Thompson, and others named after family members.

7. George Clooney

George and Amal Clooney purchased a large private island on the River Thames in 2014 for $13 million. They proceeded to remodel the existing 17th-century mansion, adding an indoor pool, home cinema, a private boathouse, and a glass house.

6. Mel Gibson

Mel Gibson owns one of the largest private islands in the world. After the release of 2004’s Passion of the Christ, Gibson bought the 5,400-acre island of Mago from a Japanese corporation for $15 million.

According to the Unique Properties, “Mago rises majestically to 670 feet on its eastern cliffs and is fringed entirely by protective reefs, powder-white beaches, and turquoise lagoons.” Mago appeared in an episode of 30 Rock titled “Operation Righteous Cowboy Lightning.”

5. Julia Roberts

The Pretty Woman star bought an island in the Bahamas worth more than $6 million. Details about the island are hard to come by, as Roberts reportedly bought the island as a private residence.

4. Tyler Perry

Tyler Perry has not one, but two islands. The writer and producer bought the 25 acre White Bay Cay plus an adjacent seven-acre island in 2009 as a birthday present to himself. Perry took flying lessons so he could take his private plane to his island, where he built a Balinese-style villa and bungalows.

3. David Copperfield

According to People magazine, back in 2006 the master illusionist dropped $50 million for a group of 11 islands in the Bahamas around Musha Cay. Copperfield then invested another $30 million to turn the property into The Islands of Copperfield Bay.

The ultra-luxe and uber private resort is located about 90 minutes from Miami, and features five main island homes. Only one group can rent the island at a time — which costs $42,000 per night for up to 12 guests — so they can exclusively enjoy the 40 private beaches, tennis courts, outdoor theater, and other amenities.

2. Steven Spielberg

The legendary director owns two islands off the coast of Portugal. The main island is Madeira Archipelago, which serves as Spielberg’s holiday home. The other island is uninhabited but is connected by a land barrier.

1. Leonardo DiCaprio

In 2005, the Oscar winner purchased the 104-acre Blackadore Caye island off the coast of Belize with big plans for the property. However, DiCaprio ran into a lot of problems over the next decade due to various setbacks and construction delays.

According to The New York Times, DiCaprio finally realized his dream of building a “wellness-focused, luxury, eco-resort” on the island in 2015. It features 36 resort bungalows and estate villas that are fully integrated into the island’s landscape, complete with solar panels and circadian lighting.
