Rihanna’s Favorite Perfume Now Comes in an Extreme Version

Kilian Love Don’t be Shy originally launched in 2007. Maybe you’ve heard of it? It’s what Rihanna reportedly smells like, and she smells delicious, according the court of public opinion. (Perhaps you’ve read about it on Twitter or seen it more recently in DeuxMoi’s Instagram stories.)

“Love, Don’t Be Shy was part of the six scents in my original collection and it has always been one of my absolute top sellers,” says founder Kilian Hennessy. “But lately over the last few years, there’s a singer who the press recognized as was wearing that scent,” he adds coyly. “Hardly a month goes by without a story commenting about it.” While he can’t say much about the connection: “The two times that I met her, she was wearing it,” he admits.

There’s a reason Love, Don’t Be Shy is still completely irresistible: it’s a tasty gourmand dream. Marshmallow, vanilla, and orange blossom combine to create a scent reminiscent of a heavenly dessert. “When I created the fragrance 13 years ago, I really wanted the perfume to make the wearer smell like something you just wanted to take a bite out of.” The addicting quality is owed primarily to the marshmallow accord: “It feels reassuring. You know it’s something you have smelled, tasted, and enjoyed before, so that’s very close to the heart,” explains Hennessey. “And who doesn’t like marshmallow?” Apparently not Rihanna.

The original juice just got a chic update in time for Valentine’s Day. While the new extreme iteration has all of the elements Love, Don’t Be Shy devotees will love, it ups the ante with an overload of Bulgarian roses and additional orange blossom and neroli essence.

“Everything that is the most expensive in the perfume, we increased it!” says Hennessey. “The roses combine with the vanilla, amber base, and marshmallow to make it feel as if the rose petals have been crystallized, almost caramelized, in sugar,” he explains.

The new flowery bouquet plays in the heart of the fragrance, which is the part of the scent that’s stays with you once the top notes diffuse away. “The result is a huge bloom of Love, Don’t Be Shy in the air,” says Hennessey. It’s a little bolder, a full blossoming floral over a delicious candy-coated center. Think, a little less Betty, a little more Veronica wearing Savage X Fenty.

“I think this perfume, maybe it’s slightly more mature, with the amplified rose and orange blossom. But someone who’s loved the perfume for a long time, is also a little more mature now, too, ” Hennessey adds. It’s presented as a limited edition version of the original: “This is for all the people who love the scent and maybe want to have even more.”

The fragrance cloud of the original perfume was already impressive, says Hennessey (Everyone who’s ever been near Ri agrees). But Love, Don’t Be Shy Extreme boasts an even larger and more intense diffusion trail, making it perfect for this moment in time. “Because we are all are having dinners outside these days, it’s nice to have a bigger presence,” says Hennessey. “You want something that’s slightly larger and longer-lasting.”
