Pod Yoga Is Now a Thing

The yoga class as we know it might be a thing of the past. Live-streamed, at-home sessions have become the norm while we’ve all been stuck indoors in quarantine. Even as yoga studios currently prepare to reopen in anticipation of lockdown easing, they are doing so with a drastically reduced capacity — and restrictive face masks aren’t exactly conducive to breathing properly while doing a more strenuous hot yoga workout.

One possible, ingenious alternative is currently being tried out: yoga in domes, perfect for the era of social distancing.

A pop-up yoga studio in Toronto, Canada has taken over an open outdoor space and filled it with self-contained plastic bubbles, so attendees can practice their poses while safely keeping their distance and minimizing risks of the transmission of coronavirus. The pods are even kitted out with heating systems, enabling hot yoga classes to go ahead, mask-free.

“The domes were pretty cool because I was able to get a bird’s eye view of all the students,” instructor Kay Ghajar told Reuters, adding that rather than physically touching and correcting people’s positions, she would help them adjust their form from outside the pods.

As is the case with other yoga studios right now, customers have to bring their own yoga mats and water (and water is definitely recommended, as you’re essentially stretching in a greenhouse). Prior to each class, guests will have their temperature taken and they will be required to disclose if they are exhibiting any COVID-19 symptoms.

They will also have to sign up in advance and present photo ID so that track-and-trace protocols can be followed should one of their fellow attendees start to have symptoms.

The domes, which are relatively spacious and measure approximately 110 square feet, are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized between sessions.

The pop-up was organized by Lmnts Outdoor Studio, and will run until the end of July.
