Miami Dolphins Spend Almost $200 Million In Free Agency On Monday

03/17/2020

The Miami Dolphins entered free agency with about $100 million in salary cap space. And in one day, GM Chris Grier put most of it to good use.

On Monday, the Dolphins handed Pro Bowl cornerback Byron Jones a five-year deal worth $82.5 million. They also landed veteran offensive lineman Ereck Flowers and pass rusher Shaq Lawson on three-year pacts worth $30 million (a max value of $36 million).

And the Dolphins didn’t stop there. They beefed up the defense more by adding the athletic New England Patriots linebacker Kyle Van Noy on a four-year deal worth $51 million.

ESPN’s Field Yates broke down all the contract details. Add it all up, and you’ll see that the Dolphins spent close to $200 million in the first day of free agency.

Last year, the Dolphins cleared bundles in cap space by moving on from veteran quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who enjoyed a career revival with the Tennessee Titans – leading them to the AFC Championship Game.

They released veteran wideout Danny Amendola, and the Dolphins also chose not to re-sign veteran workhorse running back Frank Gore. Miami eventually traded away key contributors in Laremy Tunsil, Kenny Stills, Kenyan Drake, Minkah Fitzpatrick, too.

If these latest signings aren’t enough to excite Miami fans, just think about the upcoming 2020 draft. Miami holds three first-round picks (their own No. 6, No. 18 from the Pittsburgh Steelers and No. 26 from the Houston Texans).

The Dolphins also own two second-round picks (the No. 56 is from the New Orleans Saints), plus the No. 70 selection in the third round. With all that draft capital, Miami can easily emerge as a playoff contender again next season.

Despite trading away almost every key impact player on the roster, the Dolphins managed to win five games in 2019 – including a shocking Week 17 road victory against the New England Patriots. But with these four veterans (and likely more) on the way, the Dolphins can finally envision a bright looking future.
